What actually stalls a recovery
The chemistry is the easy part. Four things stretch a five day job into a two week one. The most common by a distance is a filter that cannot keep up: sand older than about seven years channels, so water finds a path through the bed without being filtered, and no amount of chlorine will clear water the filter is not catching. Access, parking, power and water
We need to get a trolley, drums and a vacuum through the side gate, so 800mm of clear opening is the practical minimum. Noise, smell, pets and kids
There is no dust and no digging, so this is a quiet job by trade standards. The noise you will notice is the pump running around the clock for three or four days, and the 60 to 90 minutes of vacuuming on visit days. Victorian residential noise rules treat swimming pool pumps as a prescribed item with restricted hours overnight and early morning, with weekend mornings protected later than weekdays. The chlorine smell is strongest for a few hours after the day one shock. That smell is chloramine, the by product of chlorine doing its job, and it clears with the first breeze. Acid stays in a sealed drum and never gets decanted on your paving. Keep dogs off the whole pool area for the entire recovery: a dog drinking heavily shocked water is the injury we actually see, far more than any human incident. Kids stay out until we confirm free chlorine has fallen below 5 parts per million, which is typically day four to six. You can work from home right through, because we never need to come inside.
Weather, waste and what a clean finish looks like
Weather cuts both ways here. Warm water kills algae faster once the chlorine is up, but a 35 degree Pakenham day also burns chlorine off, so we dose higher. Rain is the real problem: 20mm overnight dilutes the shock and washes fresh phosphates and dirt in off young lawns, which can add two to three days. When a recovery is not the right call
Sometimes the honest answer is to spend the money elsewhere first. If your filter media is a decade old, or a vinyl liner has already failed, paying for a chemical recovery is buying a result that will not hold: get the equipment sorted, then recover the water. If a pool has been sitting green and still for more than about six months with heavy sludge on the floor, a partial drain and refill can genuinely be cheaper than the chemistry, and we will say so rather than sell you the longer job. And if the water is only cloudy rather than green, you may not need a recovery at all: start with cloudy pool water, which is usually a filter or balance issue and much cheaper to fix.
